What is Reiki?
Reiki (pronounced "ray-kee") is a
therapeutic technique of gentle touch that enhances your
body's natural healing ability. Reiki helps to restore
health by bringing the body into balance emotionally and
spiritually, supporting the body's natural ability to
heal itself. Some people call Reiki "hands-on healing"
or "the laying-on of hands."
The name Reiki actually comes from the Japanese rei,
meaning "universal," and ki (chi), meaning "energy." Chi
is equivalent to bioelectricity, which is the energy
that runs your body. Reiki allows you to access an
endless supply of this energy, and also enhances its
circulation within your body.
Where did Reiki
come from?
Reiki is an ancient Tibetan healing
art. It was "rediscovered" in Japan in the early 1900s
by Mikao Usui, a religious scholar and teacher. Reiki
was brought to Hawaii through Hawayo Takata, and
eventually reached the US mainland in the 1970s.
Like many ancient arts, Reiki was
originally a secret technique that was handed down from
teacher to student. In the past 10 years, Reiki has
become more well-known through the worldwide efforts of
William Lee Rand, and is now available in most areas of
the country.
How does Reiki
work?
At a minimum, Reiki induces a deep
state of relaxation, which triggers the release of
endorphins (the body's natural painkillers). It is a
soothing, relaxing therapy that some hospitals are
adding to their treatment plans because of its
beneficial effect upon healing.
Some people experience more dramatic
positive results. You can even learn to perform Reiki
treatments on yourself for long-term benefits.
What is a Reiki
Session Like?
Most sessions are approximately one
hour in length. During a Reiki session, you lie fully
clothed on a padded massage table in a warm, comfortable
room and listen to soothing music. The Reiki
practitioner may place her hands systematically on
various parts of your body. She also holds her hands a
few inches over other parts of your body. Each position
may be maintained for five minutes or more if required.
What Does Reiki
Feel Like?
Most people report that they feel
warmth or heat from the practitioner’s hands. Some also
feel tingling in their bodies, like being filled with
warm ginger ale. Some people also experience sensations
of lightness or heaviness.
Sometimes, people cry in an emotional
release and feel very relieved afterwards. Other people
just enjoy a peaceful, re-energizing session. Uniformly,
people agree that Reiki is relaxing. Most people fall
into a meditative state during a session, many within
the first five minutes!
What Results Will I
Experience?
Because everyone is different, each
person experiences results in their own way. Most people
report that Reiki makes them feel “mellow,” helping them
to release pent up emotions and relieve stress. Because
everyone is different, each person experiences results
in their own way.
Some have reported that it clears the
mind and creates a heightened sense of awareness. Still
others say that Reiki has changed their lives for the
better in a way that is difficult to describe. If your
life just isn't working and you can't seem to figure out
why, Reiki can help!
Is Reiki a "cure"?
A "cure" is a method or course of
medical treatment used to restore health. It implies
that the source of health is outside of you.
"Healing," on the other hand, taps
into the body's own unique ability to restore itself to
health. All Chi Wiz techniques are alternative healing
modalities that use energy from the universal life force
(chi). The healer serves as a catalyst to facilitate
this process. You are then able to heal yourself.
What is Reiki NOT?
Reiki is not a spiritual practice,
although it is based upon a spiritual tradition. It is
not related to any organized religion, and it does not
require you to subscribe to any particular belief system
in order to derive benefit from it.
